On September 19, 2000, Mr. Edward H. Harte donated $46 million to establish the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. During its decade of service, HRI has established its reputation as an "honest broker," effectively balancing the ecological and economic needs of this incredible resource.
The "Harte Model," an interdisciplinary collaboration between the six endowed chairs, addresses ecosystem scale problems. The model embraces the understanding that people and the environment are inexorably linked in any solution. That encompassing perspective makes HRI unique in the community of marine science institutes. And, that perspective combined with world-class expertise placed the HRI team in great demand during the recent deep-water oil spill.
